The San Diego Punk crew were very lucky indeed to get a interview with none other than Justin Pearson, lord of noise (The Locust, Holy Molar and Some Girls to name a few) to talk about the new album with his band Ground Unicorn Horn:
San Diego Punk: How would you describe the new Ground Unicorn Horn album, and what type of music fans do you think it appeals best to?
Justin Pearson: Well first off, it’s not really an album. It’s more a traditional single. But I’d also like to say that I’m not a fan of describing music that I’m part of. I’ll leave that to the “critics.†As it is, I’m sure it’s been written off plenty as a over hyped project. As far as who it would appeal to, I’d say the obvious, fans of all of the members other projects, i.e. The Locust, Some Girls, Moving Units, Year Future, the Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower, and Friends Forever.
How has the response been so far?
Honestly, I’m not sure. I hear that some people dig it, but it’s too new to get a lot of feedback. I think that a lot of people don’t know what it is.
How do you feel the album came out? What do you like about it, and is there anything you’d change given the chance?
I dig it. It was fun and I really enjoyed writing with the people who are part of the band. What I’d like to change about it would be the fact that it’s so short. I wish we all had more time to write. Also the recording is pretty low budget, i.e. free. I love Sal Gallegos’s work and he did an awesome job with what he has. I’m a fan of the quality of things such as The Locust material that we have done in the last few years. I think that the drums suffered a little on the recording here.
But for the most part, its lo-fi appeal is fitting for the band, at least at this point.
You’ve assembled an all-star line up of musicians; how does Ground Unicorn Horn differ from the members’ other projects? Is this band filling an outlet that you couldn’t create with other projects?
Well it is similar to something such as Holy Molar or Head Wound City. But Ground Unicorn Horn was two days and it’s different members that any of the other projects that I just mentioned. Not only do I only sing in this, which was cool to do, but I really wanted to work with Chris and Amy as I have never played with them before.
What are the goals/plans for the band? Are there more songs in the works? What about local shows or tours?
I’m not sure at this point. Since this was recorded I have been on tour with Some Girls and now The Locust. Also I was in the studio with The Locust. Chris was super busy with the new Moving Units LP and having a baby. So that also was a factor in putting this on the back burner. But there has been plenty of talk about doing more with this. I’d love to. So we shall see.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Thanks a lot.
* Who knows, maybe the keep it fast team will see Justin outside the local Poundland waiting for his mates and we could ask him a few questions of our own!
Our lives would then be complete…
